Embedding Equity as a Professional Standard
Organization: Ontario Association of Architects (OAA)
Context & Risk — The OAA has a statutory obligation to protect the public interest, including ensuring the profession reflects the diversity of the communities it serves. Membership survey data revealed systemic gaps in workplace practices, creating risk to public trust. Without a profession-wide learning framework, efforts to address bias, representation, and inclusion would remain fragmented and inconsistent.
Solution — Design and implementation of a mandatory Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) learning requirement, integrated into the OAA’s Continuing Education framework. Through a strategic partnership with Turner Consulting Group, developed and delivered accredited, accessible webinars that provided licensed members with practical guidance to support equitable and inclusive workplace practices.
Outcome — Reinforced the OAA’s leadership role in advancing professional conduct and public trust by
Establishing the OAA’s first mandatory EDI education requirement for all licensed members;
Embedding EDI into the regulatory Continuing Education Program;
Ensured consistent, profession-wide participation.
