From Global Goals to Local Practice: The OAA+2030 Series
Organization: Ontario Association of Architects (OAA)
Context & Risk — The building sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, placing increasing responsibility on the architecture profession to address climate change through design. While global frameworks such as the 2030 Challenge established clear and ambitious energy-efficiency targets, many practitioners lacked access to structured, practice-ready education translating these goals into actionable design and construction strategies. Without a coordinated, profession-wide learning framework, progress toward low-carbon, high-performance buildings risked remaining fragmented and inconsistent.
Solution — Strategic partnership with Architecture 2030 to establish a province-wide sustainability education platform, including:
Localization of a globally recognized curriculum to align with Canadian context;
Assembly of a nationally recognized expert faculty to ensure credibility and sector-wide relevance;
Design of a cohesive delivery model supporting consistency and sustained professional impact.
Outcome — Established a national benchmark for sustainability education, equipping architects with actionable pathways to meet climate and energy-performance targets while strengthening the profession’s leadership role in climate responsibility.
